Axis Intercepts

Warm Up

Find the slope of a line given two points. Leave fractions improper if you find one. Simplify.
1) (3,-2) and (4,4)

2) (-1,-1) and (0,3)

3) (-2, 0) and (4,-3)

4) (-4,5) and (1,-2)

5) (1,5) and (6,10)

What is an axis intercept?

An axis intercept is a point where a line crosses the x axis or the y axis on a coordinate graph.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the x and y intercepts from a linear equation using the zero method.
  2. Graph a line with the x and y intercepts.

Lesson Notes

If you have a linear equation that represents a line then you can use that equation to find the points that the line will cross the x and y axis. Remember that the x axis is the line on the graph the goes left to right, and the y axis is the line that goes up and down. The following method is used to find the points on a line that cross the x axis and y axis.

Zero Method
To use the zero method, replace one variable at a time with the number zero.

For example: 2x + 3y = 6
  1. Replace the y with zero 2x + 3(0) = 6
  2. Now solve for x, 2x = 6
  3. x = 3
This means that the line that fits the equation will cross the x axis at the point (3,0). You can identify the y intercept using the same steps. Just solve for y instead of x.
  1. Replace the x with zero 2(0) + 3y = 6
  2. Now solve for y 3y = 6
  3. y = 2
This means that the line crosses the y axis at (0,2)

The graph below shows the pints in red that the line crosses the x and y axis. The line crosses the x axis at 3 and the y axis at 2.
